Brief Summary of Unit:
Students will be able to see the good, bad, and ugly things that have been associated with the buffalo over the past 200 years. This will include information about some famous Americans who are associated with the buffalo and the effort to help re-populate them.

Students will Understand:
The buffalo was an important animal needed for survival in SD during the 1800's.
Buffalo once numbered over 350,000 but soon dwindled to less that 100.000 and became endangered
All parts of the buffalo were used, nothing went to waste.
Attempts are being made to re-populate the buffalo.

Essential Questions to Guide this Unit and Focus Teaching and Learning:
Why was this animal so important?
What was done with the parts of the animal?
What techniques were used to hunt the buffalo?
What caused the buffalo to become endangered?
Who is helping re-populate the buffalo today?

Key Knowledge and Skills Students will Acquire:
Students will examine how essential the buffalo was in the survival of the Native Americans.
Students will be able to explain why and how the buffalo were hunted.
Students will discuss what can be done to help re-populate the buffalo.

Assessment Plan:
Students will be quizzed over daily lesson material.
Students will be tested at the end of the Unit.
Students will be grouped in pairs and will make a power point presentation.
This presentation will include at least two sources.
There will also be daily worksheets.

Learning Activities:
The unit Introduction will include a Inspiration graphic design, and a Power Point Presentation, by the teacher and will conclude with inspiration and power points by the students.

Notes:
This unit of study will be incorporated into my third nine weeks curriculum in South Dakota History.
